A model equipped with an ‘Ortho Dual Motion’ driver featuring a gold-plated passive radiator
Tokyo Onkyo Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the Typ831 from its earphone brand MADOO. This new product features a dedicated driver unit based on the Ortho Dual Motion micro-planar driver used in the Typ930 and equipped with a gold-deposited passive radiator.

■ A True Evolution of the Typ821 Sound Signature

The goal of the Typ831 was not merely to reproduce the Typ821, which earned the support of many audio enthusiasts, but to further evolve its sound signature.
It retains the vividly extended, brilliant treble, vocal presentation that brings even the singer’s breathing close to the listener, and a cool tonal character with clearly defined contours. While preserving that presence, the tuning gives each sonic image more space and allows the performance environment to expand naturally. By combining the seemingly opposing qualities of intimacy and spaciousness, the Typ831 represents a true evolution of the Typ821.
This open spatial presentation is supported by a passive radiator positioned behind the Ortho Dual Motion micro-planar driver. It precisely regulates pressure in the ear canal, reducing the occluded sensation and unpleasant resonances that can occur with closed-back earphones. By giving individual sounds natural openness and clarity rather than confining them, it creates a more expansive soundstage without diminishing vocal presence.

■ Dedicated Ortho Dual Motion Driver with a Gold-Deposited Passive Radiator

The driver unit in the Typ831 is based on the 12 mm Ortho Dual Motion micro-planar driver used in the Typ930. It inherits the larger-diameter vibrating system and enhanced magnetic circuit developed from the 10 mm Ortho driver in the Typ821, with a passive radiator positioned behind the Ortho
driver.
For the Typ831, a dedicated gold-deposited passive radiator has been adopted. Gold deposition is also used in measurement microphones and high-precision microphones. The passive radiator consists of a diaphragm made from a thin engineering-plastic film with gold deposition and a brass mass damper. By regulating pressure in the ear canal, it reduces the occluded sensation and unpleasant resonances while helping the soundstage feel more expansive. The driver housing combines brass and stainless steel, and its internal structure can be viewed through a sapphire-crystal window.

■ High-Rigidity Housing Made from Pure Titanium

Pure titanium offers excellent specific strength and corrosion resistance. The stable oxide film that forms naturally on its surface also provides outstanding biocompatibility. MADOO uses this pure titanium for the Typ831 housing.
At the same time, titanium is difficult to machine because heat tends to concentrate at the tool tip during cutting, requiring meticulous control of machining conditions. Machining the housing for one unit takes approximately 15 hours; each housing is precision-cut from a titanium block using high-accuracy CNC machining. After machining, each unit is sandblasted by hand by a skilled craftsperson and then given a PVD treatment, accentuating the soft surface texture and sharply defined edges. Rather than relying solely on the properties of the material, the combination of precision machining and the housing’s structural design achieves both low weight and structural stability. As a highly rigid foundation supporting the vibrations of the speaker unit, it is designed to draw out the full potential of Ortho Dual Motion. The housing also incorporates an ergonomic design developed through MADOO’s previous earphone development, with careful consideration given to wearing comfort.

■ Polygonal Design Continued from Typ711 and Typ821, with the Akatsuki Marine Theme Color

The Typ831 continues the polygonal design language inherited from the Typ711 and Typ821. A hexagonal window inspired by a submarine porthole, together with the screws surrounding it, gives the product the mechanical character of a precision instrument. Revealing the internal mechanism through sapphire crystal symbolizes the Metal Schematic Design concept, in which the precision mechanism itself becomes a visual feature rather than being concealed. The hexagon is a rational geometric form found in natural honeycombs and industrial structures. By combining a gentle shape that follows the ear with the geometric strength of an industrial product, the design delivers both comfortable wear and MADOO’s distinctive visual identity.
The theme color is Akatsuki Marine, inspired by the sea at dawn. While continuing the blue lineage established with the Typ821, it evokes the first light reaching the ocean at the start of a new day and symbolizes a new beginning. A blue-anodized titanium ornament is positioned inside the sapphire-crystal window to create a blue tone with a sense of depth.

■ Four-Core Silver-Coated Copper Cable

The supplied cable uses a four-core configuration consisting of two pairs of silver-coated copper conductors. By minimizing signal loss, the cable allows the earphones to deliver their full performance. The connector is the high-quality, highly reliable Pentaconn Ear IEM connector designed and manufactured by Nippon DICS Co., Ltd. Compared with a conventional MMCX connector, the plug and socket make closer contact for superior conductivity. The design also combines easy attachment and removal with excellent durability.
The MRC023 cable with a 4.4 mm, 5-pole, L-shaped gold-plated plug is included as standard.
